Why websites and webpages need meta titles and meta tags
The term, meta tags, means information about. In short, meta tags and meta titles are signposts for search engines to find any given web page. Meta titles and tags help search engine robots to recognize and catalogue the information of each web page.
Which meta tags are the most important?
Every web page should have a meta title and a meta description tag. Some websites have the same meta title for every page – the name of the business is an example. This does not help search engines to know what is on each individual web page in your website.
Think of the meta title like the title of a book and the meta description as the blurb on the back cover of a book that explains what the book is about. Each webpage represents one book so each page needs its own title and blurb.
Add a meta title to a webpage
If the title of the page is ‘How to name a meta title’ then the meta title should match this title or be very similar, for example, abbreviated to ‘Name Meta Title’.
Add a meta description to a webpage
Meta description is used to say what a webpage is all about. Search engines show about 155 characters of the meta description in their search results so it is important to make sure that meta titles and meta descriptions make sense – this helps make your website search engine friendly.
Search engine friendly – what does this mean? Search engines will index your page as one that is a good website for the information on the page. Then, when someone looks for this information, your page has a better chance of being found! This is what is called ‘search engine optimization’ or SEO.
The two purposes of the important meta description for a webpage
- SEO, to make sure that the webpage is ranked highly on SERP (search engine results page)
- To let web visitors who what your webpage is about by providing a clear, brief overview of what the page is about.
Remember: the meta description may be your first contact with potential clients so it is important to get it right and only add words that are on the viewable webpage.
What about meta keywords?
No one is really sure, but meta keywords are mostly ignored by search engines these days. However, if you add meta keywords in a field for this, and those keywords are in the text on the viewable webpage, the meta keywords you have entered (with a comma and space between each word or term), then it may help improve your ranking with some search engines such as Google.
